A welcoming public space creates more room for walking, gathering, and enjoying the waterfront close to home.

What was once an underused stretch of riverfront is becoming a shared place for morning walks, family afternoons, and neighborhood events.

The first phase of the new riverfront park opened this week with a wide accessible path, shaded seating, native landscaping, and flexible lawn space. Town planners say the design came directly from public workshops held over the past year.

Built around everyday use

Rather than centering a single attraction, the park was planned for the small moments that shape community life: meeting a friend, taking children outside, watching the river, or walking home through a more pleasant route.

Local businesses along the nearby corridor are also preparing for more foot traffic. Several plan to extend weekend hours during the fall event season.

“The goal was to create a place that feels useful on an ordinary Tuesday and special during a community celebration.”

What comes next

A second phase is expected to add a small performance pavilion, more lighting, and connections to nearby bike routes. The town will collect feedback through the end of October before finalizing those plans.

The park is open daily from dawn until 10 PM. The first programmed event, a free community concert, is scheduled for September 6.
